Artist Spotlight: Coldplay

Arguably one of the biggest rock bands in the world, Coldplay’s beautifully melancholic sound has identified with critics and fans alike since their debut album, Parachutes, dropped in 2000. They have gone on to sell millions of albums, driven by a string of hits like “Speed of Sound”, “Clocks”, and “Viva La Vida.” Coldplay started as an idea between two college mates, Chris Martin and Johny Buckland. Heavily influenced by U2Travis, and Radiohead, Coldplay’s debut stood out among a sea of alt rock Nirvana clones. Later works would draw on influences from Johnny CashBlur, and Oasis. The boys followed up with A Rush of Blood to the Head, which went 4x platinum in the US, 8x platinum in the UK, and won the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. It also helped Chris Martin win Gwyneth Paltrow. X & Y was released in 2005 and was the best selling album of that year. Coldplay continued its domination in 2006 with Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends. One of the fastest selling albums of all time, it has gone number 1 in 36 countries, and is the most downloaded album of all time. Chris Martin has also branched into Hip Hop, working on songs with Kanye West and Jay Z.
