Last week some of us at Flycell had the opportunity to participate in a very special industry event. At a fantastic gala dinner held in Los Angeles, Doug Morris, chairman and chief executive officer of Universal Music Group (UMG), one of Flycell’s most important industry partners, received the “Spirit of Life Award” by City of Hope’s Music and Entertainment Industry Group. The “Spirit of Life Award” is City of Hope’s most prestigious philanthropic honor and recognizes individuals who have committed their time and resources to helping those in need.

Doug Morris is truly one of the most interesting people in the music world. Not only has he helped guide UMG’s businesses to include the industry’s largest global music publishing operation, Universal Music Publishing Group, he has worked with some of the most popular and influential artists of the past four decades including U2, The Rolling Stones, Phil Collins, Led Zeppelin, Bette Midler, Tori Amos and Mariah Carey, among many others.

Inspired by the guiding humanitarian principles of City of Hope, and motivated by the institution’s commitment to innovative medical research and quality patient care, a group of key industry executives founded the Music and Entertainment Industry Chapter in 1973. In its 34 years of dedicated efforts, the Chapter has raised over $69 million. City of Hope National Medical Center and Beckman Research Center is a leading research and treatment center for cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases. Designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center, the highest honor bestowed by the National Cancer Institute, and a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, City of Hope’s research and treatment protocols advance care throughout the nation.

Doug said this of his being named the “Spirit of Life” award recipient:

“I am deeply honored to serve as this year’s Spirit of Life recipient to help recognize the innovative research conducted at City of Hope to find a cure for cancer. City of Hope has provided the science behind four of the leading cancer drugs used today. I look forward to leading the industry in its support of this visionary institution.”

We were likewise honored that we could be in the audience and play our own small part in helping City of Hope find a cure for cancer. If you want to do something fun and easy to help cure cancer yourself, you can by downloading the “Just Stand Up!” ringtone. Just like UMG and others, Flycell is supporting the Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) charitable organization. Flycell is donating $1 for each download of the benefit ringtone based on the unprecedented star-studded charity song “Just Stand Up!” You can download this song by visiting this page.

“Stand Up To Cancer” campaign to receive $1 for each benefit ringtone downloaded from Flycell

Flycell is supporting the Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) charitable organization by donating $1 for each download of the benefit ringtone based on the unprecedented star-studded charity song “Just Stand Up!”

SU2C is a new initiative to raise philanthropic dollars for accelerating groundbreaking cancer research. SU2C was established by a group of media, entertainment and philanthropic leaders whose lives have all been affected by cancer in significant ways. ABC, CBS and NBC’s simultaneous broadcast of the Stand Up To Cancer nationwide fundraising event aired on Friday, September 5, 2008 with 100 percent of publicly donated funds going directly to cancer research. Over 50 of the most renowned personalities in TV, film, sports and music came together to make history in this unprecedented television event, raising more than $100 million to accelerate groundbreaking research and bring new therapies to cancer patients more quickly.

“On behalf of the Stand Up To Cancer leadership team, we are tremendously grateful to everyone who contributed to make this historic event a success,” said Lisa Paulsen, President & CEO of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, the 501(c)(3) charitable organization for the television and film business that serves as the fiduciary behind Stand Up To Cancer. “This money will go directly to funding the research programs necessary to defeat this insidious disease. This remarkable achievement was made possible by the generosity of ABC, CBS and NBC; performers who volunteered their time to participate in the broadcast; viewers who phoned in; the substantial contributions from corporations like Flycell; philanthropists; and the thousands of people who donated through our website. The Stand Up To Cancer movement has only just begun. Together, we can make the difference in this fight.”

The single “Just Stand Up!” was produced by L.A. Reid and Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds exclusively for SU2C. The song features today’s top female artists including: Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Fergie, Sheryl Crow, Miley Cyrus, Melissa Ethridge, Ashanti, Natasha Bedingfield, Keyshia Cole, Ciara, Leona Lewis, Leann Rimes and Carrie Underwood. The song’s debut performance was on the SU2C telethon on Friday, Sept 5th and received a 10-minute standing ovation.

Flycell subscribers can download the benefit ringtone as part of their monthly ringtone subscription and Flycell will give $1 to the Stand Up To Cancer campaign.

“Flycell’s participation in the SU2C campaign strives to continue the positive buzz for this song following its debut in the nationwide telethon,” said Lindsey Weinger, vice president of web experience at Flycell. “By donating $1 for each ‘Just Stand Up!’ mobile ringtone downloaded, we hope to continue to draw attention to a worthy cause among our subscribers, giving them a way to personally express their support and give back to cancer research. Customers can feel good about downloading this ringtone not just because it features their favorite artists, but because it is also making a difference.”

Flycell has featured the benefit ringtone as its “Pick of the Week” and promoted it on the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) site homepage and mobile subscriber newsletter. To download the ringtone, visit www.flycell.com.
