Gizmodo: The iPhone-to-Android Switch – 10 Things You Need to Know

The iPhone-to-Android Switch: 10 Things You Need to Know This morning Gizmodo posted a sometimes humorous, but entirely accurate column on making the switch from iPhone to Android. Anyone who is on the fence about making such a switch should read this article.

The only thing the article forgets is to mention VoIP and the Tubaloo application.

Update on Private Beta Invites

We’re just a few days into our private beta, and have been very pleased that hundreds of people have downloaded and started using Tubaloo! In fact, we had to give out new invites to a couple of the blogs that are offering invite codes to their readers.

In addition to our invite code, tubaloo1, you can find invite codes at the following Android blogs:

And thank you to all the Tubaloo users who are joining us on Twitter (twitter.com/tubaloo). Many of you have been posting your Tubaloo #s so that other users can connect with you over Wi-Fi or 3G for free. We appreciate your spirit!

What do people in Europe, Asia, North and South America have in common?

Wow! We are off to a great start on the Tubaloo private beta. Yesterday we announced the opening of our private beta and offered an invite code in our press release and here on our blog: tubaloo1.

Other Android blogs covered our news and offered their own invite codes. The rush to download Tubaloo was so great, we ran out of invites on the codes that we gave out and had to add more invites!

On Day One of the private beta we had users in the United States, Spain, France, United Kingdom, Chile, Japan and beyond all making calls on Tubaloo. If you’re using Tubaloo, be sure to keep reading this blog and follow us on Twitter – twitter.com/tubaloo – to get important updates.

If you want to try Tubaloo, you can once again use the tubaloo1 invite code. But if that has run out of invitations, visit your favorite Android blog and see if they have invites. If they don’t, send them a message and we’ll set them up with an invite code. If you write about Android and want to review our beta and offer your readers an invite code, contact tubaloo@mobilitypr.com.

You can find invites at:

Once you get your code, follow these instructions to install and begin using Tubaloo:

  • Go to http://m.tubaloo.com and enter your invite code
  • Once the code is accepted the free Tubaloo application (tubaloo.apk) will download
  • Click on the application and it will walk you through the typical Android installation process
  • After installation, open the application and it guide you in setting up your Tubaloo account
  • After the account is created, the application is used merely for setting preferences (such as placing calls over 3G or Wi-Fi, or using the inbound call back feature). It’s really just a few checkboxes and you’re off and running.
  • Once installed, start making calls the way you always have, using the Android dialer.

Tubaloo announces the private beta of our Android VoIP service

VivaAfter weeks of making final refinements, Tubaloo is very pleased to announce the launch of our beta service! Our aim is to give you control of your calling, including how much you pay for long distance and international calls. We built a voice over Internet calling service that works with your phone, not as a separate application you have to switch on in order to call. When you place calls over our service, you use the Android dialer, just like you do for every call you’re making now. The difference is what we do behind the scenes and in the background. Does it work? We’ve been testing it on Android phones all over the world — some without SIM cards — and have been making high quality calls. Calls to landline and mobile phones will be a lot cheaper than you’re paying now. And calls between Tubaloo users are always free.

Want to hear what a VoIP call placed over 3G sounds like? We’re the first service to offer that on Android, so come check us out.

The Tubaloo service is in private beta, so you’ll need an invite. Some Android blogs will be offering readers invites, so check your favorite blogs and see if they have invites. If not, ask them to get invites and we’ll quickly get them some.

If you’re quick, you may be able to use our code, tubaloo1, to get the Tubaloo app. Here are the instructions:

Go to http://m.tubaloo.com and enter the code tubaloo1.

Anyone care for an Eclair?

Google has announced that their latest SDK for Android now supports Android 2.0 — also known as Eclair. According to the Android Developers website:

“Android 2.0 brings new developer APIs for sync, Bluetooth, and a few other areas. Using the new sync, account manager and contacts APIs, you can write applications to enable users to sync their devices to various contact sources. You can also give users a faster way to communicate with others by embedding Quick Contact within your application. With the new Bluetooth API, you can now easily add peer-to-peer connectivity or gaming to your applications. To get a more complete list of the new capabilities you can add to your applications, please go to the Android 2.0 highlights page.”

Tubaloo’s VoIP via 3G on Android

PhoneDog.com, the mobile phone news and reviews website, is the first publication to take a look at Tubaloo’s new app for Android:

PhoneDog.com“Amidst the storm of debates surrounding the FCC’s investigation of Apple’s refusal to allow Google Voice into the Apple App Store and the befuddlement over the tech giant’s acceptance of the Vonage client, a small Chilean company called Tubaloo with a product of the same name is beginning to fan the flames of the growing battle over VoIP. Specifically, they are facilitating the use of 3G data networks for the purpose of IP phone calls – a task that usually requires multiple apps and hacking.”
